Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh explained 'bond' created in movie where they 'didn't hear cut' during sex scene

Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh star together in a new romantic drama by A24

Directed by John Crowley, the film follows up-and-coming chef Tobias (Garfield) and recent divorcée Almut, (Pugh), after a surprise encounter changes their lives forever.

The pair fall in love and embark on a deeply-moving romance, with a horror cancer diagnosis to deal with ahead.

Take a look at the emotional trailer for We Live in Time below:

In an interview with Josh Horowitz at 92nd Street Y in New York, Garfield admitted that he and Pugh didn’t hear the cameraman shouting ‘cut’ during one particularly passionate sex scene.

“We were doing the first take of this very intimate, passionate scene and it’s a closed set which means it’s only me and Florence and the camera operator who’s a lovely man called Stuart,” said Garfield.

“And he’s very polite and very sweet and gentle. The director’s in another room next door.

“And so the scene becomes passionate and we get into it as it were and we go a little bit further than we were meant to… it’s feeling safe and we just kind of… go from the next thing to the next thing and we’ll let this progress and we’ll just carry on.”

Opening up about their special on set ‘bond’ during a Q&A at Toronto International Film Festival, Pugh said: “We did rehearse, we had, I think, two weeks of really special, beautiful time, which is always such a wonderful thing when you get rehearsal time for any movie, where we would just talk through scenes, talk through how we felt.

“John was very good about stopping it when it got a bit too exciting and he wanted to save it for the day, which I’m always a big fan of.

“But I think, you know, today was the first day that we’ve both been talking about it since we experienced doing the film together and so much, so many, of our memories of the way that we connected and and how we built this chemistry was through the total enjoyment of falling deeper and deeper into it every day.”

She added: “Our connection is because of that, is because we made a movie about something that’s very, very real and we knew how serious that is.”

Meanwhile, Pugh revealed that she was getting tips off a midwife when filming the birth scene.

To get all the shots, the actor said she had to do 15-minute births eight times, explaining: “The only problem was I didn’t have a baby that came out so, I was just so exhausted and sweaty and tired and I got no endorphins or anything.

“But what was amazing is we worked with a midwife in the rehearsal period and we started blocking out the scene and then I continued working with her.

“I’ve never had a child, which is pretty key to knowing how to have a baby, but I do know a lot of amazing women that have had loads of babies and I’ve heard all of their stories and I really know how important it is for it to look and sound right.

“So I was with Penny the midwife and she would be teaching me about the different sounds and where it would fall and how it would land on this and that and where it would be hurting and it was just so fascinating.”

Neil Patrick Harris admitted real penis was in Gone Girl in don’t blink and you’ll still probably miss it moment

Neil Patrick Harris featured in David Fincher’s psychological thriller Gone Girl

Neil Patrick Harris has claimed his real penis was shown in Gone Girl but even the most eagle-eyed of viewers would have missed it.

Directed by David Fincher, the psychological thriller was released in 2014 and was based on Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name.

Ben Affleck stars as Nick Dunne, a husband who becomes the prime suspect in the disappearance of his wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike).

Amy goes missing on their fifth wedding anniversary and everyone thinks Nick had something to do with it.

When her diary entries are revealed, it makes things look even worse for Nick, after she opened up about her turbulent marriage and how Nick cheated on her.

However, the investigation takes a dark turn after it turns out that Amy faked her disappearance to frame Nick for her ‘murder’, as revenge.

Neil Patrick Harris plays Desi Collings, Amy’s former lover, who helps her when she is on the run.

Now, viewers will remember Affleck’s ‘full-frontal’ scene towards the end of Gone Girl, but it turns out that Harris’ penis is in the film too.

“Apparently, you can, yes,” Harris told the Daily Beast in 2017, noting you most likely missed it because it happened so fast.

“Had I been able to film my scene in a nice steamy, warm shower, perhaps there would’ve been more to talk about,” he added.

“But in my particular circumstance there was a lot of blood flowing…elsewhere.”

If you’ve seen Gone Girl, you’ll know what sex scene Harris is referring to there.

After manipulating Desi into believing she is in danger, Amy seduces him before brutally slashing his throat with a hidden box cutter.

She kills him instantly and Desi’s blood pours out of his neck after he collapses on the bed. Amy stages the murder to make it look like self-defence, to fit her victim narrative.

Speaking about the scene in a Hot Ones interview, Harris said: “That was intentionally broken down by David Fincher for me for that very reason.

“Because it was something that you can’t really rehearse too much because we would film everything right up to the ‘wet work’ as he called it.

“But then once it happened, he really wanted to make sure it felt real, and you don’t really know, you can’t really pull from resources about what you’d look like when your throat is slit, right?

“David imagined that with a sharp knife, getting your throat slit, you wouldn’t feel any pain.

“So, he would make me show him what it would look like. Because it was also mid-orgasm, so it was ‘I’m about to, I’m about to, uh-uh-uh-uh’ [mimicking sex] and then it was this very gruesome, intentionally gruesome feeling of like calm, of confusion.

“Of, what’s, why’s everything warm? Op, why’s it red? And then, what?

“And then you start blacking out because all of the blood that’s going to your brain is now going out your neck.

“So yeah, it was super technical.”

Actress Margo Stilley was originally hesitant to have her name attached to such a racy film

An actress who engaged in real-life ‘messy’ sex scenes for a film originally didn’t want her name in the film credits.

When it comes to filming spicy scenes in film and TV they are often carefully choreographed on set, with intimacy co-ordinators, clever filming angles and prosthetics used in order to make sure all the actors are comfortable shooting.

However that’s not always the case, with one very erotic drama film featuring completely unstimulated sex scenes.

Released in 2004, 9 Songs followed a series of intense sexual encounters between a British scientist (Kieran O’Brien) and an American exchange student, played by Margo Stilley.

The film featured multiple messy ‘sexual encounters’ between the pair, including one scene where O’Brien’s character ejaculates.

The decision to have unsimulated sex scenes in the film proved to be a controversial one, with the movie infamously holding the title of the most sexually explicit mainstream film.

Aged just 21 at the time, Stilley had also been cautious about having her name attached to such a racy film, initially asking to be identified only as ‘Lisa’ (her character’s name) instead.

The decision not to attach her name to the project backfired, with media outlets scrambling to identify her after the release.

“Newspapers were running competitions with pictures of me, saying, “Who’s this girl?” They were offering rewards to readers if they found out who I was. It was ridiculous,” she told The Telegraph in a 2008 interview.

However Stilley has since come around to embracing her role as Lisa, with the film allowing her to enjoy a career as an actress in flicks such as 2008’s How to Lose Friends & Alienate People alongside Simon Pegg and Megan Fox.

“It isn’t shocking. If you know you are going to watch a film like this, it’s not abrasive. It’s normal sex that everyone has, not crazy stuff,” she told The Guardian.

“I’m surprised [by the controversy], and even more by the fact that I’ve brought most of it on myself.”

Stilley also touched on the backlash in a 2008 interview with The Irish Examiner, revealing that she had been branded a ‘wh**e’ and a ‘sl*t’ for her role in the film.

“I didn’t invent sex! There’s a huge sex industry out there that’s worth billions.

“People ask me if I felt that [director] Michael Winterbottom took advantage of me because I hadn’t acted before, but they forget that I developed the character,” she said.

“It was just hot sex! 9 Songs was a real film about love and sex, and I wanted to do that film and I am proud of it.”

Actor who filmed iconic orgy scene in Midsommar revealed shocking thing viewers didn’t see

Jack Reynor had some things to say about THAT Midsommar scene

The star of 2019 movie Midsommar once spoke about the things that were left out of the iconic orgy scene in the movie.

If you don’t know Midsommar, it’s Ari Aster’s horror film about a couple (Jack Raynor and Florence Pugh) who get involved with a Swedish cult.

There’s lots of what can only be described as weird cult s**t going on in the movie which our couple end up going through.

One of these is the scene where Christian (Raynor) is given hallucinogenic tea to drink and is then made to try and get 15-year-old girl Maja (Isabelle Grill, who was in her 20s when filming took place) pregnant while the rest of the cult’s women watch and mimic what’s happening while nude.

Naturally this is quite a challenging scene to have in the movie and when Midsommar was first released Reynor told Vulture that the movie’s orgy scene was the most difficult one to shoot during the film.

He also opened up about how much of it actually ended up in the movie, saying they filmed for hours and that it could have been ‘a lot more graphic’ with some of the footage they got.

He said: “It was pretty hard-core. The vast majority of those ladies don’t speak any English.

“We shot the scene for a good 12 hours. A lot of it had to be cut back for censorship. I’m sure there will be a director’s cut where it’s a lot more graphic because it was.

“There were 37 setups to be executed that day, which is insane to try to do that in one day. They were very ambitious shots, as you can see. We got every single one of them.

“It seemed never-ending. It was collllld in that room, and we were all butt-naked the whole time. It was tough. I was trying to break the tension and make some jokes and stuff.

“I did, but the language barrier was a killer. That poor lady who’s getting down and pushing my ass into that girl? I just don’t think she wanted to do it!

“But she did, she committed herself. Everybody committed themselves to that scene.”

There is actually a director’s cut of Midsommar which was released a few weeks after the theatrical cut of the movie came out, though it didn’t just stick in the many hours of orgy footage which didn’t end up in the final film.

Some fans of the movie aren’t actually such great fans of the director’s cut, saying it ‘said things out loud that were better left unsaid’ and ended up being ‘way worse and less interesting’.

The movie ended up being well received by critics, though audiences found it more polarising.

Rotten Tomatoes critics rated the Donald Sutherland thriller 93 percent

Steamy scenes in television are commonplace these days, but back in 1973, one particular scene in a film ended up being axed out of adaptations due to its sauciness.

Oh, to have been in the room when the late Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie were getting jiggy for Don’t Look Now.

I mean, any scene so prolonged and controversial must have been a sight to see, right?

The Hollywood legend was known for his role as President Snow in the Hunger Games franchise which saw him play the evil dictator who routinely sent children to their deaths, and was thwarted by the wilderness-savvy Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence).

But you may not know his most controversial role to date.

Playing the role of John Baxter, the story revolves around ‘a married couple grieving the recent death of their young daughter’ and ‘encounter two elderly sisters, one of whom is psychic and brings a warning from beyond.’

It sounds innocent enough and for a thriller, there isn’t usually room for a nearly five-minute romp is there? Wrong.

This film took it to the next level and was so explicit that it was alleged that the British Board of Film Classification declared it beyond what would be a passable scene for audiences.

Now that it’s decades since it was released, it’s safe to say there have been some scenes which have surpassed that one in turns of vulgarity, but to be this well known for how networks refused to broadcast it? That’s an achievement for sure.

With a 93 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, critics absolutely loved the flick for its grit and depiction of grief personified.

One person wrote: “Despite being known for its lurid sex scene, Nicolas Roeg’s 1973 film avoids Hollywood sensationalism while making grief into a monster.”

Another penned: “Separate polls by the British Film Institute and Time Out London have cited it as one of the 10 best British films ever made. No argument here.”

Someone else wrote: “Like ROSEMARY’S BABY and THE WICKER MAN, it is the build-up of anticipation and the feeling that something bad is going to happen that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I am willing to bet the final scene will get your skin crawling.”

Sutherland passed away earlier this week at 88 years old, with his son and fellow actor Kiefer Sutherland breaking the news of his death on his Instagram page.

Penning the heartfelt post, he expressed his grief and made sure fans knew he had lived a wonderful life.

He wrote alongside a black and white image of him and his dad when he was a little boy: “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film.

“Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
